Ask Ubuntu is a question and answer site for Ubuntu users and developers. It only takes a minute to sign up. After upgrading to Ubuntu Even when plugged in, the "detect displays" button within the default settings app doesn't do anything.

My main concern is the final line: HDMI disconnected. There is a monitor plugged in and ready for use, and nothing I do seems to cause it to be detected. I have an nvidia graphics card, and before the update I was using proprietary drivers. When the external display problem first arose, my initial attempt was to switch back to the open source Xorg drivers. However, upon reboot, Ubuntu displayed my driver settings as using a "manually installed driver", and won't let me change it:.

In the process, something changes because is starting to detect external displays again even if you go back to GDM3. You can follow the instructions here on how to make these changes:.

Solved for me by updating to recommended Nvidea card drivers how-to. To install all recommended Drivers: sudo ubuntu-drivers autoinstall. It's apparently a better solution to run X11 as root. The top solution did not work for me on my Acer laptop, which suddenly stopped showing HDMI-1 as an output in xrandr this morning. I tried changing to the noveau drivers in case that helped, but it didn't. I read on a different site that sometimes the OEM laptop Nvidia cards can "get confused whether cable is connected or not"which I had assumed was just tech-support appeasing someone.

For some reason, that worked. This is probably an extension of "Just Learning"'s solution, the important part of which is probably the "through VGA" part. I did not have this problem on Ubuntu But after upgrading my kernel to 4.

Reverting back to the standard 4. And then reboot. I did not have success in Wayland but it worked in the Unity version. I am running I just spent several hours trying may different solutions I found on this thread and elsewhere online.

I'm running Ubuntu After a fresh install everything worked except external monitor. The reason the external display didn't work, was that the selected drivers didn't get loaded.

I have seen that it is quite a challenge for Debian: wiki. Ubuntu may be better suited and present less problems, e. The problematic points seem to be: - The graphic card: drivers are not available. Any information on these would be greatly appreciated.

How to Dual Boot Ubuntu 18.04 and Windows 10 [2019]

I have an issue with CPU fan that is not well detected and is allways changing speed. It's a little annoying but a fix seems on it's way. I'm actually running Arch Linux on the MSI GS40 right now I may try a few other distros for a while as well as I haven't gotten the hybrid graphics working correctly yet.

Personally I would like to disable it for the most part as I am using the system for software engineering primarily as a replacement for my old Macbook Pro. I have a work around solution but it isn't ideal so hopefully there will be a fix in the near future. When I did finally find a solution to disable the GPU my estimated battery life went from about It is pretty Linux friendly. I have Mint After that you'll need to update the kernel to the latest current version I'm running 4.

I'm currently using nvidia because it just works and I haven't had a need to update to a newer package but you could also try nvidia Everything else just works as far as I remember I use the bluetooth religiously to listen to music and pair with my phone as well.

Use Mint 18 at your own risk. Hey guys! You're talking about my laptop and I installed a month ago a linux distro for work. Let me know if you have any ideas! Thread starter ragnarok Start date Jul 16, Tags bios settings msi laptops and ubuntu I've been reading around alot about folks having massive issues with trying to install Ubuntu period. Whether dualboot or clean install doesn't seem to matter. I'm so stubborn, I look into stuff until I get an answer So this evening, I ran into instructions meant for either dualboot installs or clean and it seemed straight forward but it worked!

Ok, how I got I didn't I set it anyway.

Many people are having issues with MSi Laptops and Ubuntu. Good to know, Ragnar! This is very good information. I haven't yet tried v I'm still doing that from a trip I made back in June. I had to rebuilt both my Mint-W10 dual-boot drive and my Ubuntu-W10 dual-boot drive. I'm really not sure why this happens on this particular PC; it's the most stable test box I have and I do most of my W10 testing on it.

A couple of things I discovered along the way of building this setup include the big one. You never want to install your Ubuntu or any Linux on a bare drive first, and then add in W10! That hasn't worked well for me on a variety of machines, not just the Dell PC. So, for other folks running into problems with Ubuntu installs, especially in dual-boot mode is that you should always do the install from the LiveCD to a working W10 machine or other older windows version in that fashion.

This works best. We've had several questions the last couple of years on this process, and I had asked our Admins to make a special sub-forum for people attempting this dual-boot Linux-Windows configuration. To date, it hasn't happened. Probably because they are so busy, and we only get a handful of these questions each year. NET and check your Internet speed. When I installed Ubuntu on the Acer netbook with W10, I discovered quite by accident that I was only getting Mbps download speed on the unit.

Being that my ISP, Spectrum is giving me 65Mpbs everywhere else on my network, I thought that was odd, and attributed it to the underpowered processor on the netbook. After fooling around with it for a few months, I decided to wipe the drive and just reinstall with a W10 stand-alone image I had for the netbook.

And voila: the speed jumped back up to Mbps!
